The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has urged Congress to pass a genuine and effective law banning political dynasties in the country.
In a pastoral statement signed by CBCP President Archbishop Gilbert Garcera, the bishops emphasized that political dynasties are not merely a political concern, but also an issue of morality, justice, equality, and the common good.
The CBCP also expressed support for the citizen-led initiative “Dapat Isa Lang,” following the Supreme Court’s directive for Congress to fulfill its constitutional duty to enact an anti-political dynasty law.
The Supreme Court ruled that Congress has a mandatory duty to pass such legislation, after 39 years of non-compliance with the anti-dynasty provision under the 1987 Constitution.
The CBCP further called on Catholic Church institutions to help educate the public about the issue and urged Filipinos to make their own informed decisions while rejecting misinformation, coercion, vote-buying, intimidation, and political pressure.
