Rome’s iconic Colosseum in Italy was closed to visitors on Wednesday, September 23, following the death of a 22-year-old worker inside the ancient amphitheater.
The worker, identified as Andrea Moretti, reportedly fell around 10 meters while installing a new lighting system at the site.
Emergency responders attempted to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Italian authorities have launched an investigation into the workplace accident, while all construction and maintenance work at the Colosseum was ordered suspended.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed shock over the incident, saying that a death at such a young age is unacceptable, especially when it happens in the workplace.
The Colosseum was temporarily closed as a mark of respect for the victim, while authorities continue to determine the circumstances surrounding the fatal fall.
