The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) is pushing for stricter restrictions on children’s access to social media and websites that promote violence following the shooting at Banga National High School in South Cotabato.
DILG Secretary Jonvic Remulla said he will ask Congress to consider measures that would limit children’s use of social media and block access to websites that promote violence.
Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Secretary Henry Aguda also supported stricter rules governing online platforms in the Philippines.
Aguda said large technology companies should be required to secure a legislative franchise before they can offer digital platforms to Filipinos.
Meanwhile, the House of Representatives plans to invite Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to address issues involving violence and child safety on Facebook.
The DICT is also waiting for Meta to sign a memorandum of understanding aimed at strengthening measures to protect young people.
The proposed restrictions come as government agencies and lawmakers discuss measures concerning children’s access to social media platforms and online content promoting violence.
