China has urged the United States to stop expanding its military activities in outer space, warning that the deployment of weapons in orbit could fuel tensions and trigger a wider space arms race.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said Beijing opposes the weaponization of outer space and turning it into a battlefield.
Guo urged Washington to take concrete steps to maintain global strategic stability and prevent rising tensions in space.
The remarks came after U.S. Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink said the United States has “on-orbit space control weapons” capable of defending U.S. forces against hostile actions.
Meink did not disclose what specific weapons are currently deployed in orbit.
Meanwhile, Chinese state media warned that the U.S. move could trigger a broader space arms race, with Chinese military analyst Song Zhongping saying other countries could be compelled to strengthen their counter-space capabilities in response.
China has repeatedly opposed the weaponization of outer space, warning that growing military competition in the domain could create a wider security dilemma.
