President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has allocated P300 million for the repair of damaged bridges in Tarlac City following damage caused by heavy rains from the southwest monsoon, or Habagat.
Marcos inspected the Agana and Aquino bridges in Tarlac City and said the structures are local bridges, requiring cooperation between the local and national governments to speed up repairs.
Aside from providing funds, the national government will also assist with technical requirements and other necessary support, Marcos said.
Meanwhile, a Bailey Bridge is being constructed as a temporary access route at the damaged portion of Agana Bridge.
The temporary bridge is expected to allow pedestrian passage within one week. Light vehicles are expected to be allowed to cross within the following two weeks.
During the initial opening, vehicles weighing 10 tons or less, including vans, are expected to be allowed to use the temporary bridge.
Repairs to the Aquino Bridge could take longer because it sustained more extensive damage, according to Marcos.
The P300 million allocation is intended to support the repair of the damaged bridges, while the temporary Bailey Bridge is being prepared to provide access during the repair period.
Marcos emphasized the need for coordination between local and national authorities to facilitate the restoration of the bridges.
The inspection and funding announcement come after the bridges were damaged by heavy rains associated with the Habagat.
