A House lawmaker has urged the Philippine National Police to launch a nationwide firearms safety and compliance drive following a shooting at Ateneo de Zamboanga University that killed two students.
House Committee on Public Order and Safety Chairman and Manila Rep. Rolando Valeriano said the PNP should conduct a broad firearms safety and compliance campaign, particularly among licensed gun owners who have school-age children at home.
Valeriano said school shooting incidents can no longer be considered isolated cases, underscoring the need for the police to take action.
He called for the PNP to immediately carry out the nationwide campaign to promote firearms compliance and safety.
The lawmaker also urged the PNP Firearms and Explosives Office to determine whether firearms and other weapons owned by licensed gun owners are properly registered.
Valeriano said gun owners should also be reminded about proper firearm storage, particularly the need to ensure that weapons are not accessible to children.
The call came after the shooting incident at Ateneo de Zamboanga University, where two students were killed.
Valeriano’s proposal focuses on checking firearm registration and reinforcing safe storage practices among licensed gun owners, especially households with school-age children.
The initiative would involve the PNP and its Firearms and Explosives Office in a nationwide safety and compliance drive.
The lawmaker said the measures are necessary as authorities respond to concerns raised by shooting incidents in schools.
