Hontiveros calls out Meta over violent content after Zamboanga school shooting

Sen. Risa Hontiveros called out Meta over the continued spread of violent content on its platforms following a livestream of a school shooting incident in Zamboanga City.

Hontiveros said she supports the call of the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center for the public to report the URLs of dangerous videos found online. However, she said Meta itself should take responsibility for identifying and addressing such content through its platform.

The issue stemmed from a school shooting incident in Zamboanga City that was livestreamed for 14 minutes before the video was taken down.

The incident raised concerns over the continued availability of violent material online and the role of social media platforms in preventing its spread.

The CICC said one of its measures to address the circulation of violent videos was to recommend blocking the website allegedly used by the Zamboanga City shooter to livestream himself.

The agency also proposed that it be given jurisdiction over other messaging applications to help prevent their use by groomers.

Hontiveros emphasized that while public reporting of dangerous online content is supported, platforms such as Meta should also take action through their own systems.

The concerns focus on how violent content can remain accessible online and potentially spread further before being removed.

The CICC’s recommendations include measures aimed at limiting access to platforms and websites allegedly used to distribute or livestream harmful material.

The proposals come as authorities and lawmakers address concerns over the spread of violent content and the possible misuse of online platforms and messaging applications.
