21-year-old  arrested over alleged online school shooting in Cebu

Police arrested a 21-year-old man Thursday after he allegedly sent online messages threatening a shooting at Bantayan National High School-Senior High School in Bantayan, Cebu.

The Bantayan Municipal Police Station arrested the suspect at about 11:30 a.m. Aug. 20, according to police.

The incident was reported at about 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, after a school staff member raised an alarm over threatening messages received online.

Police said the messages contained a warning about a possible shooting at the senior high school.

The recipient was also allegedly told to remain alert, inform the school guard and students about the threat, and avoid going to school Friday morning.

Police immediately launched an investigation and examined the online account reportedly used to send the messages.

Authorities said the investigation led them to identify the 21-year-old suspect.

He was arrested the following day during a hot-pursuit operation conducted by police.

The suspect may face a charge of grave threats in connection with the Cybercrime Prevention Act.

Police did not provide further details on whether any shooting occurred or whether weapons were recovered in connection with the reported online threat.

The arrest followed the school’s report of the threatening messages, which prompted authorities to investigate the source of the warnings and identify the person allegedly behind them.
