Motorcyclist dies after getting caught in fallen power cable in Davao Oriental

A 32-year-old motorcycle rider died after becoming entangled in a fallen power cable in Sitio Baliwagan, Barangay Cabagayan, Tarragona, Davao Oriental, on Aug. 11, 2026.

The Tarragona Municipal Police Station received information about the incident at about 5:45 a.m., according to its report.

The victim was identified as Jayson Catundag Batonon, 32, an employee of a motorcycle company.

Based on the police investigation, Batonon was riding his motorcycle when he reached a blind curve in Sitio Baliwagan. He reportedly did not notice a fallen power cable crossing the road after a power pole had toppled.

Batonon became entangled in the cable and fell onto the concrete road, sustaining severe injuries to his head and body.

He was immediately brought to the Tarragona Municipal Health Center, where a doctor declared him dead on arrival.

Another rider was also injured in a separate incident involving the fallen power pole in the same area. The injured rider was brought to a hospital for medical treatment.

Authorities continue to investigate the incidents to determine the circumstances that led to the fallen pole, cable and resulting accidents.

The police report did not provide additional details about the cause of the pole falling.

Authorities reminded motorists to exercise caution, particularly when traveling along roads where hazards such as fallen electrical cables and other obstructions may be present.

The two incidents occurred in the same area of Sitio Baliwagan and were linked to the fallen power pole.

Batonon was the only reported fatality in the initial police account. No further details were provided regarding the condition of the other injured rider.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the incidents.
