PHIVOLCS has already recorded approximately 15,000 aftershocks since the powerful earthquake struck Southern Mindanao and affected several surrounding communities and provinces.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, or PHIVOLCS, confirmed that the recent earthquakes remain aftershocks of the June 8 magnitude 7.8 earthquake.
The latest earthquakes triggered panic among residents in General Santos City because of continuous ground shaking experienced during the past several days.
Authorities recorded a magnitude 6.4 earthquake at 12:13 p.m. on August 5, prompting the suspension of classes and government work.
Another magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck at 5:41 a.m. on August 6, causing renewed concern among residents already affected by previous tremors.
Senior Science Research Assistant Nani Danlag explained that the earthquakes occurred because underground rock formations continue settling after the massive June earthquake.
Danlag emphasized that aftershocks from powerful earthquakes may continue for several months before seismic activity gradually decreases across the affected fault systems.
PHIVOLCS urged residents to remain calm while staying alert because stronger aftershocks may still occur without warning during the coming weeks.
Authorities also reminded families to prepare emergency supplies, identify safe evacuation areas, and follow official earthquake safety advisories during future seismic events.
