685 voluntarily surrendered weapons destroyed in Maguindanao Del Norte

The 6th Infantry (Kampilan) Division and Joint Task Force Central, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) through the ASPIRE Project, conducted the ceremonial destruction of voluntarily surrendered small arms and light weapons on June 19 at Camp Siongco in Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao del Norte.

A total of 685 firearms voluntarily turned over by residents from various communities in Maguindanao del Norte were destroyed during the activity, which formed part of ongoing efforts to promote peace and security in the region.

The ceremony was led by Maj. Gen. Jose Vladimir R. Cagara and attended by representatives from local government units, peacebuilding institutions, law enforcement agencies and development partners.

According to Cagara, the destruction of the firearms represented more than the physical disposal of weapons. He said the activity also symbolized the collective commitment of communities and institutions toward achieving a peaceful and secure future for the Bangsamoro region.

The military official emphasized that every firearm surrendered and destroyed could represent a life saved and a potential conflict prevented.

The event was conducted under initiatives aimed at reducing the number of loose firearms in communities and encouraging public participation in peacebuilding efforts.

Cagara also called on individuals who still possess loose firearms to cooperate with authorities by voluntarily surrendering their weapons.

He said such cooperation could help sustain peace, stability and development across South-Central Mindanao.

The destruction of the firearms marked another step in efforts by government agencies and partner organizations to address security concerns while supporting long-term peace initiatives in conflict-affected communities.

Officials said the program reflects continuing collaboration among the military, local governments, international partners and community stakeholders in promoting public safety and strengthening peacebuilding efforts throughout the Bangsamoro region.
