COMELEC eyes August 22 or 29 special elections in Dasmariñas, Cavite

The Commission on Elections is considering holding special elections in Dasmariñas following the expulsion of former Cavite 4th District Representative Kiko Barzaga from the House of Representatives.

In an interview, COMELEC Chairman George Erwin Garcia said that special elections must be conducted no earlier than 60 days and no later than 90 days after the vacancy occurs.

Based on their initial discussions, Garcia said the special elections could be held on either August 22 or August 29.

He noted that the polls cannot be pushed to September because the first Bangsamoro Parliamentary Elections are scheduled for September 14.

Garcia also emphasized that the special elections must be held outside the one-year election ban period leading up to the 2028 national and local elections.

He added that preparations should begin immediately, as election officials have only about three months to organize the special polls.
