British lawyer Peter Haynes confirmed as Duterte’s new counsel

The International Criminal Court (ICC) Registry has formally confirmed the appointment of British lawyer Peter Haynes as the new counsel for former President Rodrigo Duterte.

In a document dated May 15, 2026, the Registry informed Trial Chamber III that the former president wished to be represented by Haynes in the upcoming court proceedings.

According to the Registry, the appointment was also confirmed on the same day following Haynes’ acceptance of the role.

It can be recalled that on May 8, Duterte’s former counsel Nicholas Kaufman filed a motion before the chamber seeking permission to withdraw as counsel. Kaufman also stated that Haynes had agreed to immediately assume representation.

Meanwhile, on May 13, Duterte signed the formal appointment of counsel, officially confirming Haynes as his legal representative before the ICC.
