Deadly landslide in Mati City kills entire family

Four members of a family, including a pregnant mother, died after a boulder crushed their home in Upper Salazar, Barangay Central, Mati City, Davao Occidental, early Friday morning, Feb. 20, 2026.

The incident happened around 6 a.m., according to information obtained by Brigada Mati from the Office of Civil Defense-XI.

Authorities identified the victims as Habib Anting; Kharen Anting, 39; Nhor Anting, 13; and Thahani Anting, 5. Officials said Kharen was pregnant with what would have been her third child.

Rescuers first retrieved the father from the debris and immediately brought him to a hospital. However, he later died from his injuries. In the following hours, rescue teams recovered the three other members of the family. All were declared dead.

Initial reports said a large boulder fell onto the family’s house, burying the structure and trapping those inside. The impact destroyed the home.

Mati City has been experiencing continuous heavy rainfall in recent days. Authorities said the prolonged rains caused flooding in several areas and triggered landslides in parts of the city.

Local officials are continuing to monitor communities affected by the weather disturbance. Flooding and soil erosion were recorded in multiple areas as a result of the persistent downpour.

Rescue and disaster response teams were deployed to assess the situation and respond to affected residents.

Authorities have not released further details as of posting, but monitoring and response operations remain ongoing in areas hit by heavy rain and related incidents.
