The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has maintained that it cannot conduct snap elections without a law explicitly mandating it.
In an interview, Comelec Chairperson George Erwin Garcia clarified that there is no existing constitutional or legal framework under the 1987 Constitution that allows for such an electoral process.
This means the poll body cannot hold special elections in the absence of enabling legislation.
Over the weekend, Senator Alan Peter Cayetano proposed the possibility of holding snap elections for the President, Vice President, Senate, and House of Representatives, with incumbent officials barred from running.
However, Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III rejected the idea, stressing that there is no constitutional or legal basis for such an election.
