Inihayag ng Department of Foreign Affairs o DFA na pormal nang hiniling ng Pilipinas sa United Nations na irehistro ang extended continental shelf o ECS nito sa Western Palawan region sa West Philippine Sea.
Ayon kay DFA Assistant Secretary for Maritime and Ocean Affairs Marshall Louis Alferez, ginawa ang pagsumite ng final claim sa UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf o CLCS sa pamamagitan ng Philippine Mission to the UN.
Anya, ang pagsumite ng formal claim ay deklarasyon ng Philippines’ maritime entitlement sa ilalim ng UN Convention on the Law of the Sea o UNCLOS.
Ito na ang ikalawang beses na nagrehistro ang Pilipinas ng ECS entitlement.
Una ay noong 2012, kung saan kinumpirma ng CLCS ang partial submission ng Philippine Rise, na nagbigay ng karagdagang 135,506 square kilometers ng seabed area sa bansa.
