3 dead, 2 injured in brother-in-law’s rampage after funeral

A family gathering turned tragic after a brother-in-law allegedly stabbed five family members, killing three and injuring two, in Sitio Ubas, Barangay Kidalapong, Malita, Davao Occidental. The suspect, identified as Luciano Makalundang, 52, was quickly arrested and is now detained at the Malita Municipal Police Station.

The victims, who had just returned from a funeral, were identified as Carmen Salmon, Diosdado Manumba, and Jolieto Manugca, all pronounced dead at the scene. Catherine Salmon and Jerry Manugca survived the attack but sustained injuries.

According to police investigations, the suspect was searching for his wife, who he believed was hiding with her family. Makalundang reportedly wanted to reconcile with her but became enraged when he couldn’t find her. He allegedly accused the family of concealing her, leading to the violent outburst.

PSSg. Reign Heart Nuñez, who responded to the incident, apprehended the suspect. In an interview with Brigada Davao, PLTCol. Mark Donnal Edquibal revealed that the suspect was emotional in detention and had attempted to take his own life.

Makalundang claimed his in-laws had influenced his wife against him and admitted to previously assaulting her. He now faces charges of multiple murder and multiple frustrated murder.

The incident has left the community in shock, highlighting the devastating consequences of unresolved family conflicts. Authorities continue to investigate the case as the victims’ families mourn their loss.
