Eleven passengers of a motorbanca were rescued by authorities after failing to return from a trip to Capitancillo Islet, located in Bogo City, Cebu, on Sunday, January 26, 2025.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), Tabogon Bantay Dagat Team, and local fishermen conducted the rescue operation following a report received at 11 p.m. on the same day. Authorities were alerted after the motorbanca, which had left for the islet, did not return as expected.
The operation faced delays due to poor sea conditions, making the rescue even more challenging. By 10:18 a.m. on January 27, the motorbanca was located approximately 10 nautical miles off the coast of Barangay Tabunok in the town of Sogod.
All 11 passengers were safely rescued and brought to a hospital for medical evaluation.
An investigation is currently underway to determine what caused the incident and whether the motorbanca operator could face legal liabilities. Authorities have not ruled out negligence, and questions are being raised about the vessel’s compliance with safety standards.
This rescue operation highlights the risks involved in sea travel during unpredictable weather conditions. It also underscores the need for stricter regulations and better preparedness to prevent such incidents from happening again.
