Iloilo taxi driver returns ₱2.4M cash left behind by passenger

A 52-year-old taxi driver from Pavia, Iloilo, is being hailed as a hero after returning a bag containing PHP2.4 million in cash left behind by a passenger.

Anthony Aguirre’s honest act has earned him a PHP20,000 cash reward and the title of Honorary Citizen of Iloilo City.

City Mayor Jerry Treñas praised Aguirre on January 20, stating that his actions reflect the integrity of the Ilonggo people.

Aguirre was driving his taxi on January 17 when he transported a passenger from a hotel to the Lapuz roll-on, roll-off wharf, bound for Palawan. The following day, the taxi operator received a call from the Iloilo City Police Office-Lapuz Police Station reporting a missing bag.

When Aguirre checked his vehicle, he discovered the bag with the large sum of money inside. Without hesitation, he immediately returned it to the authorities, ensuring that the money was untouched.
