Drunk brother-in-law kills mother, injures teen over ₱500 debt in Negros Oriental

A 38-year-old mother was killed while her 16-year-old daughter was injured after they were stabbed by a relative inside their home in Bayawan City, Negros Oriental on the evening of May 1.

The victim was identified as Melody. Police identified the suspect as Junjun, the husband of the victim’s sister-in-law.

According to Melody’s husband, Ron, the suspect arrived at their house intoxicated. At the time of the incident, Melody was in the living room putting their 10-month-old baby to sleep.

Ron said Junjun suddenly attacked Melody, stabbing her in the nape. The force of the attack caused the knife to break.

The suspect then allegedly used the broken knife to stab the couple’s 16-year-old daughter in the forehead, leaving her injured.

Authorities said the attack may have been triggered by a financial dispute. Ron said he owed Junjun ₱2,000, with only ₱500 remaining unpaid. He explained that he had been settling the amount in installments, as the suspect’s electricity line was connected to their household.

The suspect is now under police custody and is facing appropriate charges.

Police continue to investigate the incident to determine additional details surrounding the attack.
