A 47-year-old police officer was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle while conducting a checkpoint in Jimenez, Misamis Occidental, on the evening of Sept. 21.
The incident happened at about 9:45 p.m. at the National Highway Intersection in Purok 5, Barangay Butuay, Jimenez.
Based on the initial investigation, personnel of the Jimenez Municipal Police Station were conducting an overlapping checkpoint when a vehicle traveling from Aloran toward Ozamiz City suddenly crashed into the checkpoint signage.
The vehicle then struck the police officer assigned to the Jimenez MPS.
The officer sustained serious injuries and was immediately brought to Jimenez Medicare Community Hospital for medical treatment.
The driver was identified as a 60-year-old retired soldier who was reportedly believed to be under the influence of alcohol.
The driver and vehicle were brought to the Jimenez MPS for proper disposition.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing to determine the full circumstances of the incident and establish the appropriate accountability.
Authorities reminded motorists to slow down, remain alert and follow checkpoint and traffic regulations to help protect people on the road.
