The Philippine House of Representatives has summoned Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to a congressional hearing concerning social media safety, according to the Department of Information and Communications Technology.
The hearing will tackle issues involving dangerous online content, the accountability of social media platforms, and possible measures to better protect Filipinos in digital spaces.
The House also postponed the DICT budget hearing while lawmakers focused on serious concerns involving Meta and social media platforms.
These concerns include online sexual abuse and exploitation of children, child sexual abuse and exploitation materials, illegal online gambling, cyberbullying and social media addiction.
The congressional inquiry places major social media platforms under scrutiny as lawmakers examine their responsibilities in addressing harmful content and protecting users, particularly children.
DICT Secretary Henry Aguda said the agency recognizes the oversight function of the House of Representatives and supports measures aimed at ensuring accountability among major social media platforms.
The hearing is expected to discuss the concerns raised by lawmakers and possible steps to improve safety in digital spaces.
The DICT statement did not specify the date of Zuckerberg’s appearance or whether he has confirmed attendance.
