15-year-old drowns while searching for lost cellphone for P1,000 reward in Cebu

A 15-year-old boy drowned after allegedly searching for a cellphone that had fallen into the sea in Barangay Hagnaya, San Remigio, Cebu.

The victim was identified as Mark, a resident of the barangay.

Based on the initial investigation, Mark was fishing with three other minors while traveling from San Remigio Fish Port toward Hagnaya Port.

According to his companions, at around 9 p.m. Aug. 23, a 23-year-old apprentice of a passenger vessel allegedly offered them a P1,000 reward to search for his cellphone, which had fallen into the sea.

While searching for the cellphone, Mark suddenly disappeared from the view of his companions.

Police and the Philippine Coast Guard immediately conducted a search and rescue operation.

Mark’s body was found at 7:46 a.m. Aug. 24 under the ramp of Hagnaya Port.

He was declared dead following the discovery of his body.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

Authorities are looking into the circumstances surrounding the drowning, including the reported search for the cellphone after the alleged P1,000 reward was offered.
