Heavy flooding affected two barangays in General Santos City after continuous rains caused water levels to rise beyond drainage canal capacity overnight.
Residents of Barangay Conel said they experienced the highest floodwaters in the area, with water entering several homes for the first time.
One resident described the flooding as unprecedented, saying the rising waters quickly submerged streets before reaching residential properties throughout the affected community.
Purok 8 Chairman Victorino Balaba Jr. said residents had to improvise protective measures after floodwaters overflowed drainage canals and threatened their homes.
He added that families worked together to prevent floodwater from entering their houses despite the rapidly increasing water levels across the barangay.
City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office Head Dr. Bong Dacera confirmed receiving reports of flooding in Barangays Conel and Katangawan overnight.
Emergency response teams immediately proceeded to the affected communities to conduct assessments and provide assistance to residents impacted by the flooding incident.
Initial assessments recorded six households as the most severely affected by floodwaters that inundated homes and damaged roads within Barangay Conel.
Authorities also documented damage to agricultural crops and other livelihood sources, increasing the challenges faced by families recovering from the flooding.
Local officials continue monitoring the affected areas while assessing additional damage and coordinating necessary assistance for residents displaced by the flooding.
