Rescued Philippine Eagle Sawaga-Dalwangan dies during rehabilitation

The Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) announced the death of Sawaga-Dalwangan, a Philippine eagle that had been undergoing rehabilitation at the Philippine Eagle Center after being rescued in Bukidnon.

Sawaga-Dalwangan was rescued after reportedly being attacked by more than 30 monkeys in Bukidnon.

According to the PEF, the eagle initially showed encouraging signs of recovery following its rescue. It became stronger and more alert, was able to eat on its own, and responded well to treatment.

The foundation said those improvements formed the basis of its earlier updates on the eagle’s recovery.

However, Sawaga-Dalwangan later suffered a sudden medical crisis while still under rehabilitation and could not be revived.

The PEF said an initial necropsy has already been completed, while histopathological examinations are still ongoing to determine the exact cause of death.

A consolidated report will be released after all laboratory examinations and analyses have been finalized.

The foundation also expressed gratitude to everyone who participated in the rescue and rehabilitation of the critically endangered bird.

Among those acknowledged were the Daraghuyan community, rescuer Marven Linoy and his companions, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the Malaybalay City Government, the Provincial Zoo, veterinarians and other individuals and organizations that assisted in the rescue, treatment and care of Sawaga-Dalwangan.

The Philippine Eagle Foundation said the collective efforts of rescuers, conservation workers and partner agencies reflected their shared commitment to protecting the country’s national bird despite the unfortunate outcome.

The foundation said it will release additional information once the remaining examinations have been completed and the final findings on the eagle’s death become available.
