The second Brigadahan initiative of Brigada News FM stations in the Davao Region successfully delivered thousands of relief items to residents affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck on June 8.
A total of 3,219 food packs were distributed to families in Barangay San Isidro in Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental, and in Glan, Sarangani Province.
The relief effort was carried out by Brigada News FM Tagum, Davao and Mati, together with Brigadahan partners and volunteers.
The food packs were made possible through donations from listeners of Brigada News FM stations across the Davao Region who contributed assistance for communities affected by the disaster.
In addition to food packs, the team delivered drinking water, tarpaulins, biscuits, medicines, toys, lighters with flashlights, blankets and towels for affected residents.
In Barangay San Isidro alone, 830 families received food packs and loaves of bread.
The distribution effort faced logistical challenges due to weather conditions and damaged access routes. The convoy experienced delays after one of the trucks became stuck in deep mud caused by heavy rainfall in the area.
Two communities, Barangay Quiapo and Barangay Molmol, were particularly difficult to reach because of road conditions. To ensure that assistance reached residents, volunteers transported 400 food packs for each barangay using habal-habal motorcycles.
Despite the challenges, relief workers continued the distribution to affected communities.
During the activity, volunteers also interacted with children in Barangay San Isidro. Simple items such as bubble blowers were distributed, providing moments of recreation for young residents affected by the disaster.
Organizers said the initiative aimed not only to provide relief supplies but also to extend support and encouragement to families recovering from the effects of the earthquake.
