Ateneo coach Baldwin on leave amid probe into student-athletes’ deaths

Ateneo de Manila University has announced that men’s basketball coach Tab Baldwin and team manager Epok Quimpo have gone on leave amid the ongoing investigation into the deaths of student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili.

In a newly released statement, the university said the move is intended to preserve the integrity, independence, and fairness of the investigation, and to ensure that all individuals connected to the case can cooperate freely.

According to Ateneo, the university community continues to mourn the loss of the two student-athletes.

As part of its commitment to honoring their memory, the university said it is important to pursue the truth regarding the tragedy.

The university’s Board of Trustees has also ordered a comprehensive fact-finding inquiry to ensure accountability, clarity, and lessons on community safety.

The inquiry will examine the circumstances surrounding the incident, reconstruct a transparent timeline of events, review all athletic protocols, and interview individuals with relevant information about the tragedy.

Once completed, the independent findings of the inquiry will be submitted to the Board of Trustees.
