One suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebel was killed, and three high-powered firearms were seized after an encounter with government forces in Barangay Maguibuay, Tagkawayan, Quezon early Saturday, August 2.
The 20-minute firefight broke out during a security operation by the 16th Infantry Battalion under the 2nd Infantry (Jungle Fighter) Division, following a tip from local residents about armed individuals in the area, the 201st Infantry Brigade reported.
Recovered at the scene were an AK-47 rifle, an M16A1 rifle, an M203 grenade launcher, magazines with live ammunition, a bandolier, and a wristwatch. The identity of the slain rebel is still being verified as of press time.
The military said clearing and pursuit operations remain ongoing to track the remaining members of the group who fled during the encounter.
Maj. Gen. Ramon Zagala, acting commander of the 2nd Infantry Division, said the incident reflects growing cooperation between the military and local communities in efforts to end decades of insurgency in Southern Tagalog.
“We don’t take pride in any loss of life,” Zagala said. “It’s heartbreaking to see lives wasted in the service of a group that brings fear and suffering. No one wins in this kind of fight.”
Zagala appealed to remaining insurgents to surrender. “Lay down your weapons and return to your families. The government is ready to help you start again.”
