A new scheme linked to Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) is targeting unsuspecting Filipinos with false promises of free vacations, Senate Deputy Minority Leader Risa Hontiveros revealed during a Senate hearing.
According to Hontiveros, victims are lured through social media offers for all-expense-paid trips. Once they accept, they are flown to Thailand, then forced to cross into Myanmar through Mae Sot, a northern border town.
Upon arrival in Myanmar, the victims are brought to online gaming and scamming centers, where they are held captive and coerced into illegal work. Those who resist face physical abuse, while female victims reportedly suffer sexual violence.
In response, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) confirmed that they have helped repatriate 172 Filipinos affected by the scheme. The agency is providing reintegration assistance to help victims recover.
Authorities urge Filipinos to be cautious of job and travel offers that seem too good to be true. The Senate continues its investigation into POGO-related crimes.
